Kia K5 Review

After undergoing a makeover in 2021, the Optima was succeeded by the Kia K5 2022, which is the midsize sedan produced by Kia. As this article is being written, it holds the top spot in our rankings for midsize sedans. The Kia K5 is ranked just below the Honda Accord, which is another one of our favorite sedans, but the Accord is more expensive.

When it comes to its appearance, the competition in this class tends to take the boring route, which is why the K5’s exterior is such a breath of fresh air. Its higher trim levels include an interior design that is contemporary and approaches the level of elegance found in premium brands.

The changes that will be made for the 2023 model year are probably going to be minor and will largely consist of improvements to the availability of features.

Although the 2022 Kia K5 is marketed as a family car, it hints at a more seductive character with its enticing exterior design and available 290 horsepower engine. The sedan that was formerly known as the Kia Optima is not about to unseat its constantly good competitor, the Honda Accord.

However, the K5’s roster of popular equipment and friendly pricing make it a strong value play due to its competitive pricing and attractive features. The appealing interior of the sedan is bolstered by a wide back seat, and every model comes standard with advanced active safety systems and technology for information and entertainment.

The Kia K5 Hybrid is ranked just below the Honda Accord, which is another one of our favorite sedans, but the Accord is more expensive. The changes that will be made for the 2023 model year are probably going to be minor and will largely consist of improvements to the availability of features.

The Kia K5 GT is equipped with a more powerful engine, and the way it spins its tires will either attract or repel potential buyers. The basic powerplant is not particularly objectionable, and it is the only way to have an all-wheel drive on the vehicle.

Despite having a driver’s seat that is excessively high and rides isolation that is badly damaged by the largest available wheel-and-tire combo, the 2022 K5 is a remarkable sedan overall, regardless of whether or not it is purchased for a family.

When I go inside, I can’t help but wonder how the Kia K5 GT-Line manages to keep its starting price so competitive. The new red “leather” option for the sedan gives the impression of being quite expensive for a decision that does not cost anything, and the fact that it is fully vegan means that it will not weigh on your conscience.

Although there are some instances of hard plastics, the majority of them are located on the lower panels, which are areas where my hands do not typically wander. The arrangement of the cabin is uncomplicated, and there are plenty of physical buttons and switches that are intuitive and simple to use.

It is also very little in the way of visual clutter. Even while the rear seat does not have as much legroom as, say, a Honda Accord, I find it to be quite large for my 6-foot frame. However, passengers who are taller than I am may find the fastback-style roofline to be an annoyance.

How is the 2022 Kia K5 different from its predecessor?

Kia K5 (2)

The new Kia emblem will be fitted to all K5 models for the 2022 model year, and the entire lineup will receive a variety of fresh standard features during the redesign. The front-drive LXS now comes standard with USB charging connections in the back seats.

The GT-Line now comes standard with all-wheel drive, but if you want the system, it will cost you an additional $1,600 as opposed to being included in the package that cost $3,700 in the previous model year. The most notable change is that the old 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system has been replaced with a 10.3-inch touchscreen that is standard on all GT-Line and above trim levels.

In addition, a wireless smartphone charger is now standard on the center console of all GT-Line vehicles with front-wheel drive. New 360-degree camera systems, power-folding external mirrors, and front parking sensors are being added to both the EX and the GT trim levels.

Those who aren’t concerned with the additional firepower provided by the GT’s 290 horsepower engine will find that the GT-Line offers a nice blend of racy aesthetic components to choose from. This is the one that we would recommend, and for an additional cost of $1600, an all-wheel drive can be added to it so that it provides traction in any weather condition.

Aside from that, each GT-Line comes equipped as standard with a sharper body package, wheels measuring 18 inches, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and wireless smartphone charging.

Adaptive cruise control, advanced forward-collision warning, forward collision warning, full LED headlights, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof are all included in the Premium option, which we highly recommend purchasing.

Kia K5 Price?

The Price of Kia K5 begins at $23,790. That is an average starting price for a car of that size and class. The base price of the top-of-the-line K5 GT trim is $31,190, which is less than the price of the top-of-the-line model of many other automobiles in this class.

The Performance and the Engine in Kia K5

Kia K5 (3)

The 180-horsepower front-drive K5 that we tested showed respectable acceleration around town, and our research revealed that it reached 60 miles per hour in 7.0 seconds. On the other hand, it was not as remarkable when traveling at highway speeds, where it required additional time to complete passes.

However, because of its reliable transmission and well-insulated cabin, the engine noise was kept to a minimum most of the time and was more like a low rumble. The full-size version of the Monty GT comes equipped with a more potent 2.5-liter turbo-four engine that is capable of producing 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque.

In addition to its exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission (which is equipped with the same wet dual-clutch as the Hyundai Sonata N Line), the sportiest version of the K5 comes standard with larger brakes, an exclusive suspension tuning, and wider tires mounted on larger 19-inch rims. The GT that we drove reached 60 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds and came to a stop from 70 miles per hour in 163 feet.

The Sonata N Line reached sixty miles per hour in 5.0 seconds less time and came to a stop at an even shorter distance (152 feet). However, the high-performance Hyundai that we tested had the option of summer tires instead of the all-season tires that come standard on the Kia, which contributed to the Hyundai’s superior performance.

The K5’s aggressive design may give the impression that it is more sporty than is the case, but this is not the case at all. We’d say that the steering and handling are about average for a vehicle of its type. However, the fact that the K5 is simple to operate may be of greater significance. When you need to pass, the transmission is attentive to your requests for downshifts and shifts relatively smoothly overall.

Kia K5 Miles Per Gallon (MPG)

kia k5 miles per gallon

When equipped with the standard four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, the EPA projects that the 2022 K5 will achieve a maximum combined mileage of 29 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. When all-wheel drive is added to the equation, those ratings take a significant dive, falling to 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the interstate.

However, these numbers are comparable to those of the all-wheel-drive versions of the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry. The 290-horsepower, front-wheel-drive-only K5 GT has the lowest fuel economy of the lot, with only 24 mpg in the city and 32 on the interstate.

On the interstate at 75 miles per hour, we tested the fuel economy of a front-wheel-drive K5 equipped with the base powertrain, and it returned an amazing 43 miles per gallon, which was 5 miles per gallon better than the government figure. The GT also outperformed expectations, coming in with a result of 36 mpg despite having a rating of only 24 mpg.

Kia K5 Interior Design, Cargo Space, and Amenities

Kia K5 interior

Considering how much it costs, the interior of the K5 looks incredible. The layout manages to be both elegant and uncomplicated, and the interior is decked out with aesthetically pleasing components like the use of wood trim on the dashboard and doors.

The K5 comes standard with a variety of high-end interior features, including ambient interior lighting on the dashboard and doors, front seats that are heated and ventilated, a panoramic sunroof, and a wireless charging pad.

Even when adjusted to its lowest position, the driver’s seat still has a lofty feel to it; nonetheless, the convenient location for the driver’s left foot and the floor-hinged accelerator are also welcome additions. Additionally, there is a lot of legroom in the back seat, and the trunk is large enough to accommodate all of your belongings. We were successful in stowing away seven carry-on luggage in that space.

Connectivity and entertainment system in Kia K5

Kia K5 (12)

The Kia K5 2022 comes equipped with an infotainment system that has a touchscreen that measures 8.0 inches and shares a bezel with the instrument cluster. When you step up to the GT-Line, you automatically get the larger touchscreen that measures 10.3 inches.

Both of these systems include a volume knob in addition to buttons that are physically located on the steering wheel. Strangely, the smaller monitor supports wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, however, the larger display does not and instead requires a corded connection to function properly.

The enhanced unit, on the other hand, possesses profiles that may be personalized and the capacity to connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time.

The capacitive touch buttons on the improved screen of 10.25 inches are difficult to find without searching, so the physical shortcut buttons on this device are recommended. In addition to that, our test device featured a total of four USB charge connectors.

The superior sophisticated driving aids did not generate any false warnings at any point. The standard adaptive cruise control is improved with the addition of a new optional feature called Smart Cruise Control, which slows down the K5 before entering a curve in the road. In its entirety, it is without a doubt one of the most impressive systems available in its market.

Those who are looking for the best possible aural experience can also get the Kia K5 with a Bose audio system that features 12 speakers.

FAQs Regarding the Kia K5

Kia K5 (8)

Is the Kia K5 a Reliable Sedan?

Indeed, the Kia K5 is a capable automobile. It comes with powerful turbocharged engines, reasonable mileage estimates, and a pleasant driving experience. The cabin of this Kia is attractive, and the seats offer a high level of support. You are provided with a large quantity of basic driver aid technology, and the infotainment functions are straightforward to operate.

However, some of the K5’s competitors are more enjoyable to drive and offer rear seats that are roomier than the K5.

Should you buy Kia K5 Or Not?

The Kia K5 is not going to be the right choice for drivers who are looking for a pleasurable experience when they are behind the wheel, but it should be an enticing option for most other consumers. Any buyer in the market for a midsize car will recognize the value in qualities such as the vehicle’s good looks, comfort, and abundance of equipment.

Kia K5 Insurance Cost?

The amount that you pay to insure your Kia K5 will be determined by several different aspects, such as your deductible, the amount of coverage that you choose, and the kind of insurance that you go with. Your insurance premiums may be affected not just by your age and gender but also by other factors such as your location, credit score, and driving history.

Kia K5 VS Honda Accord

Every year, the Honda Accord is one of the cars that we consider for the top spot in our rankings of midsize cars. It offers what is perhaps the most opulent cabin of any vehicle in its category, and it is among the class leaders in terms of both passenger and cargo volume.

Additionally, it is one of the most athletic vehicles in its segment, and it achieves higher fuel ratings than the K5. The Kia is a good car, but the one true benefit it has over the Honda is that it has all-wheel drive, whereas the Accord does not.

The Honda Accord does not have this feature. The Kia K5 was one of the vehicles that we considered for the Best Midsize Car for the Money award in 2022; however, the Accord was ultimately chosen as the winner due to the exceptional balance of quality and price that it offered.
